Richard Gregory was born on 12 October 1932 and died on 19 August 2017. He was comedian belonging to African-American origin, social critic, civil rights activist, author, businessperson, plot theorist, and occasional actor. Gregory started his career as a comedian while contributing in the military in the mid-1950s. He worked in the Army for 1 year and a half at Fort Lee in Virginia, Fort Hood in Texas, and Fort Smith in Arkansas. In 1954, He was traded while appearing in Southern Illinois University. In 1956, after being released he came back to the university but didn’t get a degree. He shifted to Chicago with a wish to perform comedy professionally.

In 1958, Gregory launched the Apex Club nightclub in Illinois. However, The club failed to impress and landed Gregory in financial suffering. In 1959, Gregory grabbed a job as master of ceremonies at the Roberts Show Club. While working for the USA Postal Service during morning time, Gregory performed as a humorist in small, primarily black-patronized nightclubs. He was one of the first black funnymen to achieve fame and stardom while performing for white audiences.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Gregory described the history of black comics as: “Blacks could sing and dance in the white nightclubs but weren’t allowed to stand flat-footed and talk to white folks, which is what a comic does.” In 1961, Gregory worked at the black-owned Roberts Show Bar in Chicago when he was observed by Hugh Hefner. Gregory gave the credit of his career to Hefner. Based on his performance at Roberts Show Bar, Hefner appointed Gregory to work at the Chicago Playboy Club as a comedian.

Gregory made his first television debut on the late-night show Tonight Starring Jack Paar. Early in his career, Gregory was offered the role on Tonight Starring Jack Paar. Gregory’s comedy caught controversy in some traditional white circles. The administration of the University of Tennessee called Gregory an “extreme racist” whose presence would be a disgrace and an insult to many citizens of this state and canceled his invitation by students to speak on campus.

Gregory stood at number 82 on the list of Comedy Central in the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of all time and had his star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. He hosted along with Cathy Hughes, and was a regular morning guest, on “The Power”, WOL 1450 AM talk radio. He married Lillian Gregory in 1959. Both had 11 children together. He also did a few movies and was appreciated and applauded for his comic skills and timings in the movies.
